More than 90 years ago, a rich history and passion for wine began. DeFalco Family Wines' craftsmanship originated in the vineyards of Italy before making its way to the bustling streets of Toronto, Canada. Guided by their unwavering dedication to winemaking, DeFalco Family Wines eventually found their home in sunny Orange County, California, where their legacy continues to thrive.
At the heart of the family's winemaking tradition lies Gus DeFalco, a visionary winemaker whose journey began in his childhood. As a child, Gus's fascination with winemaking was nurtured in the heart of the Italian section of Toronto. Accompanied by his father, uncles, and cousins, young Gus eagerly awaited the arrival of "fresh" wine grapes from California vineyards at the train station. These family trips not only served as a means to acquire the finest grapes but also laid the foundation for a cherished family tradition.
Wine making quickly evolved into a joyous and communal affair, with the entire family uniting in the backyard. Together, they sorted, de-stemmed, crushed, and indulged in the fruits of their labor, accompanied by laughter, songs, and jubilant festivities. The grapes would then be transferred to the basement, where they underwent the delicate process of fermentation. A week later, the family reconvened to press the grapes and transfer the newly formed wine into wooden barrels, where it would patiently age and develop its distinctive character.
Gus's adventurous spirit led him to Southern California during his teens. There, his unwavering love for wine, food, family gatherings, and laughter never diminished. In a remarkable display of entrepreneurial spirit, 19-year-old Gus, alongside his friend Tom Lazarra, opened a pizzeria in Alhambra, fueling their shared passion for bringing people together through food and fine wines.
Following his service in the Army, Gus deepened his winemaking knowledge through his involvement in various home winemaking groups, including the esteemed Cellar Masters and The Orange County Wine Society. His thirst for knowledge led him to prestigious institutions such as UC Davis and Fresno State, where he honed his craft and established invaluable connections with exceptional wine grape growers.
Throughout the years, Gus's unwavering commitment to his craft has garnered him over 100 esteemed wine awards, a testament to his unyielding pursuit of excellence. One of his dreams began to materialize when he established Orange Coast Winery in Newport Beach, a charming urban winery that has captivated wine enthusiasts for years. Recently, Gus passed the torch to a remarkable couple, Doug and Debbie Wiens, ensuring that his legacy endures.
Today, Gus finds himself semi-retired, embarking on his latest venture: DeFalco Family Foods and Wines in Fountain Valley, California. This new chapter brings immense gratitude as they collaborate with some of California's most esteemed winegrowers, allowing them to procure a select few of the region's finest grapes. Guided by the belief that wine is an integral part of the culinary experience, DeFalco Family Wines and Foods seeks to pair their handcrafted Italian foods, created from cherished DeFalco family recipes spanning over a century, with their exquisite Italian-style wines.
Every bottle of DeFalco wine undergoes meticulous craftsmanship and is bottled in small, limited batches within the heart of Orange County. This dedication ensures that the utmost care and attention to detail are infused into every sip. With a production range of a modest 25 to 50 cases per batch, DeFalco Family Wines and Foods guarantees an exceptional level of quality and exclusivity that wine enthusiasts can truly savor.
